It is well-known that serum ferritin levels increase as an acute phase reactant. In
patients who have infections or inflammatory states, the levels of ferritin can go
up several-fold. However, what has not been understood is why this phenomenon occurs,
if it has any physiological basis and if this evolutionary mechanism is of benefit
to the host?
