A meritorious move against homeopathy

      We welcome the move against homeopathy of the highest medical deontological authority in Italy (Federation of the Associations of Physicians, Surgeons, and Odontologists, FNOMCeO). Early in May this year a FNOMCeO note stated that “at present there is no scientific proof or biological plausibility supporting the soundness of homeopathic theories…” This is a courageous statement as it moves against not only the consolidated beliefs of consumers and a florid market but, sadly, also the consideration that the European Commission granted homeopathic products when it regarded them as medicinal products [

As such they should have been assessed by the European Medicines Agency and national drug agencies although – the Commission noted - because of “the very low level of active principles they contain” they should undergo a “simplified registration procedure” and be “placed on the market without therapeutic indications…”.
